This is my final project for Out of the Box, a class surrounding non narrative filmmaking at Emerson College. I utilized the slates from Patrick Dugan’s BFA Thesis film and edited them into the experience that is ▷ (Marker).

BTS: Echoes

Mid May 2016 I had the opportunity to work as the Gaffer for Erik Fattrosso on his BFA thesis film Echoes. Below are a few pictures of setups from the hectic week of filming.

The two night time exterior setups were not ideal, as they didn’t give the top down appearance of moonlight. They were also prone to massive side spill and dramatic drop off.

BTS: Tigress

For two weekends in September I got the opportunity to Key Grip for Kiera Wilson’s BFA project, Tigress. Below are some pictures of a few setups for this project.

Overhead of the Green Screen rig I put together, lit by 10 – 4×4 Kino Flo fixtures. It came out to be a 19′ circle.

I’ll post more about the process for conceptualizing this rig in a bit.

BTS: @ The Verb

This past weekend I had the opportunity to work on a video shoot with C-49 Productions at the Verb Hotel in Boston. Since the verb is a retro themed hotel, we were able to rock a 70’s period vibe.

Panorama shot of the hotel room with Green and Blue kino bulbs. The green bulbs are resting atop the headboard of the bed. The three blue bulbs are (from left to right) taped to the wall and supported on the bottom by an apple box, taped to a coleman, taped to the cord for the overhead lamp.

Here you can see the rig for the overhead Fiilex a little better, just after a take of spraying hairspray (olive oil).

For the shots around the pool I laid out kino bulbs in alternating colors along the pool and taped two vertically on the two rightmost umbrellas.

We were stealing a shot at a shell station in Cambridge (the one with the conventional light display). We used a SUV to block the headlights from the semi that was delivering fuel and lit the scene with two Area 48 LED lights running off IDX batteries.

BTS: Inside Boxes

This project was my third set experience overall. I was the Best Boy Grip and Grip Truck Driver for this half of principal production. We shot in two basement level apartment. All equipment was staged in the driveway adjacent to the location, meaning the G&E team got to spend a lot of time outside.

On the second location a few members of the crew parked in an enforced parking lot behind the apartment building we were shooting at. I was out with the truck and a tow truck squeezed by, the driver got out and started looking for parking permits on the cars. I ran inside and alerted the rest of the members of production to this. Everyone rushed outside and we were able to get out with only having to pay the driver to let one car off the hook. It was a crazy experience.

We also had to store all the equipment in my suite after wrap, until we could return it.
